Stefan Knight
This October, in honour of Black History Month, we’re celebrating 31 Black professionals in property. Today we’re celebrating Stefan Knight.
Stefan, CEO of JSJ Smart Homes, leads the charge in providing top-tier smart home automation solutions. From integrating security and access control to lighting and energy management, his goal is to make homes smarter, more efficient, and safer through cutting-edge technology.
Stefan's love affair with technology started early, driven by a fascination with how it could elevate everyday living. The blend of property and tech drew him in, presenting a chance to introduce innovative solutions that boost both comfort and security. His journey has been guided by the wisdom of mentors who instilled in him the importance of perseverance and staying ahead of technological trends.
One book that left a lasting imprint on Stefan is Robert Kiyosaki’s "Rich Dad Poor Dad". It’s a well-worn classic, but its lessons on financial literacy, investing, and wealth-building profoundly shape his business philosophy and everyday decisions. For Stefan, the book’s insights on mindset, risk-taking, and creating long-term assets are invaluable it’s a must-read for anyone keen on rethinking their approach to money and success.
Stefan's early life wasn’t easy. Growing up in a crowded single-parent household, he watched his mother struggle to make ends meet. Without GCSEs, his prospects seemed dim, but his resolve to generate wealth burned bright. He tirelessly offered his services for free at numerous construction sites as an electrician’s mate. Eventually, his tenacity paid off with a job at a small electrical firm working on high-end West End projects.
The turning point came when a £19m renovation in Chelsea opened his eyes to the potential of home automation. Encouraged by his girlfriend (now wife), who had entered Cambridge University early, he pushed beyond his limits and found a mentor who urged him to pursue his passion for automation. Self-funding his education at UCL, Stefan’s determination led him to start JSJ Smart Homes, a business that has since handled projects worth over £100m, employed eight talented individuals, and mentored young engineers.
Clients like Harrods Design Studio and Berkeley Homes, as well as international projects in France, Oman, Portugal, and Trinidad & Tobago, are a testament to the impact and reach of JSJ Smart Homes. Stefan’s vision is to expand globally, making smart home automation accessible to a wider audience and championing sustainable, eco-friendly solutions for a greener future.
Stefan's story is a testament to the power of determination and the possibilities of entrepreneurship. His journey inspires us, showcasing that with grit and vision, incredible achievements are within reach.
