Michael Kyei-Ayensu

At PeopleDem property we believe in celebrating our community by spotlighting black excellence in property. Today we are celebrating Michael Kyei-Ayensu.

Michael is a property developer and entrepreneur, and the founder of Jacob West. He leads the acquisition of new projects and drives the company’s expansion in Accra, Ghana. Committed to innovation, Michael is constantly exploring new ideas and technologies to position Jacob West as an industry trendsetter.

With over 20 years of experience in the real estate sector, Michael brings both deep expertise and a genuine passion for property consulting. His career began in the UK and has since flourished in Ghana, where he has established himself as a visionary leader and a highly respected property adviser and developer.

Michael’s journey into property began long before he formally entered the industry. As a young athlete, particularly in football, he developed what he describes as his superpower a competitive mindset combined with a strong sense of teamwork. “Real success comes from how well the team performs together,” he explains. This philosophy now underpins his business. He views his organisation like a football team everyone has a role, everyone must perform, and as a leader, it’s his responsibility to bring out the best in each individual while aligning them toward a shared goal.

His sporting background also built resilience. “In sports, you lose, you make mistakes, and you get back up.” That mentality has been critical in navigating the realities of doing business in challenging environments like Ghana. For Michael, it’s this combination of competitiveness, teamwork, and resilience that has shaped who he is today.

Michael’s decision to pursue property was influenced by two defining experiences one positive and one difficult. During university, he gained valuable work experience in the industry, learning from Robert Steinhouse, founder of Grays Inn Estates. This exposure gave him insight into the business and sparked his interest.

However, in his early 20s, he suffered a financial loss after investing in property through a relative. While challenging, the experience taught him important lessons about risk, structure, and doing business the right way. Together, these contrasting experiences shaped his path one showed him what was possible, the other what to avoid.

Following this setback, Michael started a business with his brother. Reflecting on that period, he says “I’ve built every business venture from nothing from the age of 22 to today. There was no major backing, no shortcuts just starting, learning, failing, and building step by step. That journey has shaped how I think, how I lead, and how I approach every opportunity.”

His journey has not been easy, but it has been deeply supported by both experiences and people. The 2008 financial crisis was a pivotal moment losing everything forced him to rebuild from scratch and strengthened his resilience.

Family has also played a crucial role. Michael credits the influence of strong women in his life his wife, mother, mother-in-law, and sister whose support and strength have grounded him through difficult times. While he did not have formal mentors, he learned through experience, setbacks, and even rejection. These challenges pushed him to become more self-reliant and persistent.

He also credits Ghana itself as a teacher. “It teaches you patience, adaptability, and responsibility very quickly. You can’t succeed here without growing as a person.” Looking back, Michael sees every challenge, interaction, and setback as part of his growth and it’s why he is intentional about giving back and supporting others.

What motivates Michael most is impact. For him, real estate is not just about buildings it’s about transforming how people live and how Africa is perceived. “I love that we can take a piece of land and turn it into a community a place where families grow, children are raised, and people feel proud to call home.”

He is also driven by a broader mission: proving that “The New Africa Already Exists.” Each project challenges outdated narratives and demonstrates that quality, structure, and opportunity can be built locally. “Honestly, I love the process the early mornings on site, the problem-solving, the pressure. In Ghana, nothing is handed to you. You earn every step. That’s what makes it meaningful. And ultimately, it’s home.”

When asked what title he would choose for a biography of his life, his answer was clear: The New Africa Already Exists. “Everything I’ve done from business to community building has been about changing the narrative. I want to be remembered as someone who didn’t just talk about Africa’s potential, but showed it through action through developments, through people, and through impact.”

Looking ahead, Michael’s vision is to expand Jacob West across West Africa over the next decade, developing projects in multiple cities. His ambition is not just to build properties, but to set new standards in quality, design, and community development.

He aims to position the company as a leader in shaping modern African real estate both locally and globally through strategic partnerships, strong execution, and a clear vision. “It’s bigger than property,” he says. “It’s about influence, impact, and changing the narrative across West Africa.”

A key part of that vision is reshaping perceptions of Africa. Through his work, Michael aims to highlight the continent as a place of opportunity, growth, and world-class living. He believes that the “New Africa” already exists it simply needs to be seen, experienced, and believed.

To achieve the next phase of growth, Michael is focused on two priorities securing large-scale funding and building a stronger, more experienced team. He is seeking long-term investment partners who understand the opportunity within African real estate, as well as professionals with high-level experience who can help scale operations across markets.

Despite his business achievements, Michael is clear about what matters most. One of his proudest accomplishments is being fully present in his children’s lives from birth. “No matter how demanding work gets, I made a conscious decision to be there not just physically, but actively involved.” For him, that is real success. “You can build businesses and communities, but being present as a father is something you can’t replace.”

He also shares “I have an amazing, God-fearing wife, and her prayers are what keep me going. Her support, strength, and belief in me have been a constant throughout my journey, especially during challenging times.”

It has been an honour to tell Michael’s story. He is an inspiring example of leadership, resilience, and vision demonstrating what is possible through determination and purpose. As both a businessman and a family man, he continues to shape not only communities, but mindsets serving as a powerful example to the diaspora and future generations.

We look forward to seeing the continued impact he will make in Ghana and across the African continent.
